Understanding your newborn
A course for expectant parents
A 2 hour course covering everything you need to know as first time parents to care confidently for your newborn – We will cover the basics from a newborn point of view starting with what a baby looks like at birth, to feeding, nappy changing as well as parent wellbeing. This course is delivered by experienced senior neonatal nurses, who will give you the most up to date evidence-based information about safely caring for your baby, finishing up by answering any questions you may have. This course is run over one morning and includes coffee, pastries and a chance to meet other soon to be parents to form a support network.
You will leave this course ready to care for your baby confidently.
- What’s ‘normal’ for your newborn – What to expect at delivery, early feeding, keeping warm, skin to skin, standard post-natal care, what to expect if your baby needs neonatal unit care.
- Feeding your newborn – Breast feeding, expressing, responsive feeding, feeding cues. Bottle feeding – preparation and cleaning, paced/safe feeding. Keeping the other parent involved.
- Safety and first aid – car seat safety, safe sleeping, coping with crying, first aid, What’s normal, skin and rashes, nappies/feeding.
- Baby care – Bathing/topping and tailing, nappy care, mouth care, umbilical care.
- Long term family wellbeing – Perinatal mental health, physical wellbeing, bonding and attachment, developmental care, supporting both parent’s involvement in caring for your newborn, grandparents.
- Signposting, support, groups – questions and answers.
Please note this is a class aimed at learning all you need to know about your newborn, delivered by experienced neonatal intensive care nurses, and whilst we have attended countless deliveries, we are not midwives and as such we are unable to offer specific advice regarding your pregnancy concerns, these should be directed to your own midwife or GP.
